Why a Higher Incident Rate can be BETTER than a Lower One

Any safety professional worth his salt understands that safety is not about getting the number of incidents down. It is actually about getting it to go up! Making the number go down is easy. Just manage the number itself and report fewer incidents. Easy peasy.

If the number goes up, you are increasing your opportunities to learn, identify hazards and reduce negative outcomes (injuries). Of course, you must put in the EFFORT to go out and solve the issues you are learning about and maintain the relationship and free flow of communication between all employees. Not so easy...but its the right thing to do.

Learning is the heart of safety. Getting the incident rate low is NOT the heart of safety.
